09.01.15 •  Nora Lectures in Finland and Japan
In June PEN Trio oboist Nora Lewis presented the paper, "“The Swedish Invasion” of Popular Music: How Government Investment in Music Education, Artistic Creativity, and Self-Determination Led to Increased Share of GDP" at the 2015 College Music Society International Conference in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland.  Following the conference she traveled to Estonia and St. Petersburg, Russia with her husband double bassist Gordon Lewis. In August Nora traveled to Tokyo, Japan for the 44th International Double Reed Society Conference and presented, “Cross-Cultural Connections: Asian Traditions and Western Innovations in 20th Century Compositions for Oboe.” 

08.20.15 • Eric’s Busy Summer
This past summer, PEN Trio bassoonist Eric Varner spent three weeks on the West Coast, performing with the Bellingham Festival of Music in Bellingham, Washington. He also gave concerts with the Michigan City Chamber Music Festival in Michigan City, Indiana, as well as at the Glickman-Popkin Bassoon Camp in North Carolina. 

08.08.15 • Residency at Wildacres Retreat in North Carolina
The PEN Trio just finished a week long residency at Wildacres Retreat in Little Switzerland, North Carolina.  The residency was spent rehearsing new repertoire for 2015-6 and reading through new works for future programs.  Truly a beautiful place to be able to rehearse!  

08.01.15 • Phillip Publishes Book
PEN Trio clarinetist Phillip O. Paglialonga recently published a new book which is now available from Imagine Music Publishing. The book, Squeak Big: Practical Fundamentals for the Successful Clarinetist, has already garnered significant praise from leading clarinetists including members of the orchestras in Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

Squeak Big teaches aspiring clarinetists the fundamentals necessary for success on the instrument through conceptual development and practical exercises. It will undoubtedly become an important resource for aspiring clarinetists and educators worldwide.

08.01.15 • Nora becomes Associate Director for Music at Kansas State University
PEN Trio oboist Nora Lewis recently was named Associate Director for Music at Kansas State University’s School of Music, Theater and Dance. In this role Nora will also continue to teach oboe and to perform with the PEN Trio.

08.01.15 • Phillip Performs at ClarinetFest in Madrid
PEN Trio Clarinetist Phillip O. Paglialonga recently was a featured artist at ClarinetFest 2015 in Madrid, Spain.  ClarinetFest is the annual conference of the International Clarinet Association and includes some of the most prominent clarinetists in the world.

The PEN Trio is excited to visit Port of Spain, Trinidad to perform and work with students at the University of Trinidad and Tobago in March.

12.04.14 • PEN Trio to Premiere Work by Peter James Learn
The PEN Trio is excited for the premiere of Mechanisms and Interludes by composer Peter James Learn at the University of Miami in March.

12.01.14 • PEN Trio Awarded Grant to Record New CD
The PEN Trio is excited to announce grant funding for a new recording project.  The CD will be recorded by Boston based Soundmirror with engineer Dirk Sobotka and producer Jason Hastings.  The recording will be done in New York in June 2015.

11.05.14 • PEN Trio Premieres New Work by Jon Grier
The PEN Trio was thrilled to premiere Triple Dances by composer Jon Grier at the Greenville Fine Arts Center (Greenville, SC).  It will be published in the "PEN Trio Collection" through TrevCo Music Publishing and available early in 2015.

05.01.14 • Eric Joins the Faculty of Lynn Conservatory
PEN Trio bassoonist Eric Varner has recently accepted a position at the Lynn Conservatory in Boca Raton, Florida.  Eric will serve both as chair of woodwinds and Associate Professor of Bassoon.

04.04.14  • Phillip to Publish a Pedagogy Book 
PEN Trio clarinetist Phillip O. Paglialonga has recently agreed to publish a clarinet pedagogy book with Imagine Music Publishing.  The book is tentatively titled Squeak Big: Practical Fundamentals for the Successful Clarinetist and will be released in 2015.

04.01.14 • Phillip Becomes a Gonzalez Artist
PEN Trio clarinetist Phillip O. Paglialonga has recently agreed to become a Gonzalez Artist.  He plays on the Gonzalez GD reeds exclusively.

The PEN Trio recently premiered Walking the Cotswolds by New York composer Allen Cohen. It will be published in the "PEN Trio Collection" through TrevCo Music Publishing later this year.

03.9.14 • PEN Trio Premieres Work by Aleks Sternfeld-Dunn
The PEN Trio recently premiered Oblique Strategies by composer Aleks Sternfeld-Dunn at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. The trio plans on recording the work later this year. It will be published in the "PEN Trio Collection" through TrevCo Music Publishing later this year.

10.3.13 • PEN Trio Premieres Work by William Bradbury
The PEN Trio premiered 5*4*3 (Except After C) by California composer William Bradbury at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The trio will continue to perform the piece throughout the year and is hoping to record the work this spring. 5*4*3 (Except After C) will be published by Trevco Music Publishing as part of the new "PEN Trio Collection" and available at Trevco-Varner Music.

09.30.13 • PEN Trio Premieres Work by Jenni Brandon
The PEN Trio premiered Found Objects: On the Beach by California composer Jenni Brandon at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio. This six-movement work tells of objects found at the beach, from different colored sea glass to feathers, shells, and stones. The trio will continue to perform the piece throughout the year and is hoping to record the work this spring. Found Objects: On the Beach will be published by Trevco Music Publishing as part of the new "PEN Trio Collection" and available at Trevco-Varner Music.

12.09.11 • Eric Becomes Owner of TrevCo-Varner Music
PEN Trio bassoonist Eric Van der Veer Varner and his wife, Kelly Daniels, are proud to become the new owners of TrevCo-Varner Music.  TrevCo Music was established by Trevor Cramer in 1983 to provide a reliable and complete source for double reed music. The PEN Trio is happy to announce it was recently invited to give a featured performance at the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors (NACWPI) 2012 Conference.  The conference will take place November 15-18, 2012 in San Diego, California.
